Chris Osgood gets three more years with Wings

As I wrote in December, the Wings were working on getting Chris Osgood signed to an extension.

Talks finally settled on a three-year extension, announced today by the team.

It's a smart move by both sides - Osgood loves it here in Detroit (his wife is from the area, and they live here during the off-season) and for the Wings, this brings them security in goal through 2010-11.

Osgood, who turned 35 last November, is 19-2-1 and leads the NHL in goals against average with a 1.68 and saves % with .932.

Next year the Wings have to bring in long-touted prospect Jimmy Howard and figure out if he's their goaltender of the future. Having Osgood around means Howard will be able to fight to show he can be a no. 1 guy in the NHL, with Osgood serving as a safety net.
