Canadiens still hot for Hossa

The Montreal Canadiens are actively trying to acquire a top-line winger and GM Bob Gainey remains on Marian Hossa's trail.
Amid reports that the Canadiens were close to acquiring Hossa from the Atlanta Thrashers earlier this week, the two sides continue to talk.

Montreal's La Presse reported that the Canadiens order custom gloves for Hossa, although it turned out to be his brother's, Marcel, who plays for the Rangers.

The Habs are atop the list of teams interested in Hossa. Boston, Ottawa, Detroit, San Jose and Pittsburgh have all made inquiries.

La Presse suggests the likes of Michael Ryder and Mark Streit could be packaged in a deal for Hossa, although TFP has learned that the Thrashers want Chris Higgins as part of a deal.
Hossa, 29, is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer and the Habs would want to sign him to an immediate extension if they acquire him.

In addition to Hossa, the Canadiens have expressed an interest in Calgary's Alex Tanguay, Tampa Bay's Brad Richards, Toronto's Mats Sundin, Chicago's Martin Havlat and Edmonton's Jarret Stoll.

TSN reported earlier this week that the Habs could be working on a deal for Tanguay that would send Ryder and a draft pick to the Flames. In turn, the Flames would use the freed up cap space to acquire a top-line forward.
